Winter wonderland?

Someone asked me if you can build your soil in the winter months. I of course replied "this is the best time to do it!"

Raised with traditional English gardens and horticulture schooling, I was always taught that the gardening season was from may till September and a few leaves in between. Wrong. So many times over.

I see now that gardening truly starts in sept and continues all winter. No soil, no plants. Nature supplies the building blocks for soil creation in the fall, who are we to contest nature? I use fierce fish in the fall always as well to inoculate the soil for the winter. This way, when the soil warms in the spring, the microbes are already present and revving to build!
